Stir fry Rice dumplings

Rice dumplings are soft, slightly sticky, mixed with various flavours and textures.

Fun Fact: In india, The association of modak to Lord Ganesha has been the work of mythology mostly since the vedic age where the sweet is shown not just as a reward from Goddess Parvati but also as something that could satiate the elephant god’s appetite.

What is interesting about these adaptations, is while the filling changed as per the region modak travelled to, which initially was around the coastal areas that were rich in both rice, coconut and jaggery, the technique of making it remained largely the same.

Most experts also believe that dumplings were invented by Zhang Zhongjing, a Chinese medicine practitioner who lived in the Eastern Han Dynasty, the second imperial dynasty of China that lasted from 206 BC to 220 AD.

Weather we call it dumplings, Kozhukkatta or Modak. We love to enjoy deliciousness on a plate.

Ingredients for rice balls:

1- Rice flour- 2 cups

2-Water- 2 cups

3- Salt- 1/2 tsp

4-Oil- 1tsp

Ingredients for stir fry:

1- Oil- 2tsp

2- Mustard seeds- 1/2 tsp

3- Red dried chilli- 1

4- Curry leaves- 8-10

5- Onion- 1 small

6- Garlic and Ginger -1 tbp

7- Green bell peppers- small piece

8- Green chilli- 1

7- Carrot grated- 1 small

8- Kashmiri Red chilli powder- 1tsp

9- Cumin powder- 1/2 tsp

10- Tomato ketchup - 2 tsp

11- Green chilli sauce- 2tsp


Step 1- Boil 2 cups of water in a pan, add salt, drizzle oil and switch the flame off.

Step 2- Add 2 cups of rice flour and mix with a spoon and let form a dough. Cover the lid and rest the dough for 10 mins.

Step 3- Once dough is workable and not too hot, apply some oil to your palms and work surface, knead the dough soft until all lumps are gone and make small balls out of the dough.

Step 4- Steam these rice balls in a steamer for 8-10 mins on medium flame and keep aside.

Step 5- Heat 2 tsp of oil in a wok, add mustard seeds and let crackle, add curry leaves, Chopped onions, chopped ginger and garlic , chopped bell peppers, green chilli and grated carrots and stir fry.

Step 6- Add in the spice powders, salt and sauces and toss in the steamed rice balls and stir fry for 2 mins. Dumplings are ready!

Serve with hot cup of tea.
